Anders Sandberg: Talk on Cognitive Enhancement

Date: Tuesday, 11 May, 19:00
Speaker: Dr Anders Sandberg (University of Oxford)
Title:  Cognitive Enhancement
Venue: Balliol College LR32, Oxford.

Further details: In a recent Nature survey, one in five academics said they had used drugs for non-medical reasons to stimulate their focus, concentration, or memory. In the future, technology may allow us to directly inspect and enhance our brains in order to radically increase our thinking capacities. Should we utilise such technology? Will we? How will it change us? In this far-reaching talk, Anders Sandberg will discuss current and near-future approaches to cognitive enhancement as well as the accompanying ethical dilemmas. There will be discussion following the talk and we will move to the Turf Tavern for further conversation afterwards.

Dr Anders Sandberg is a James Martin Research Fellow at the Future of Humanity Institute, Oxford University. He has a background in computer science, neuroscience and medical engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. in computational neuroscience from Stockholm University, Sweden, for work on neural network modeling of human memory. He has also been the scientific producer for the major neuroscience exhibition "Se Hjärnan!" ("Behold the Brain!"), organized by Swedish Travelling Exhibitions, the Swedish Research Council and the Knowledge Foundation that toured Sweden 2005-2007. He is co-founder and writer for the think tank Eudoxa.
